The challenges

Network administrators face a variety of challenges these days.

Mobile computers often carry sensitive data. These need to be protected, regardless of time and place. Moreover, users become more and more demanding in terms of flexible and independent work. They wish to use both “real” computers and thin clients. Still they do not wish to do without any part of the software they usually have at their disposal, nor wait long for this software to be installed.

Computers need to be protected from data manipulation, viruses and unauthorized access even within internal company networks. Finally, one aim is to lower helpdesk expenses and to implement and safeguard corporate guidelines.

The tool pack

In order to meet these client challenges, Microsoft provides the „Microsoft Desktop Optimization Pack“ (MDOP), a collection of tools. These five applications support the administrator’s work:

• Microsoft Application Virtualization: applications are separated from the operating system, access is made via group guidelines integrated in the Active Directory. Users can work in a mixed desktop- / thin client environment.
• Microsoft Asset Inventory Service: Software assets become easier to manage
• Microsoft Diagnostic and Recovery Toolset (DaRT): leads to shorter helpdesk times and offers improved diagnosis opportunities, which make client computers safer
• Microsoft Advanced Group Policy Management: role-based administration and templates simplify the administration of the implemented group guidelines, while a flexible delegation model allows the implementation of a sophisticated admin concept
• Microsoft Desktop Error Monitoring: allows agent-free monitoring of the clients. The fact that monitored incidents are stored in a database allows sustainable problem solving

In MDOP, Microsoft has collected tools that help use clients effectively and efficiently. MDOP works perfectly with Microsoft System Center products and integrates seamlessly into the System Center strategy, which makes IT infrastructures dynamic.
